Illawarra Shoalhaven Natural Hazards Snapshot Report

The purpose of this document is to provide a high-level overview of the disaster risks faced by each member council of the Illawarra Shoalhaven Joint Organisation (ISJO). It brings together information on community characteristics, natural hazard exposure, historical events and emerging risks, to support a shared understanding of the challenges and opportunities within our region. This shared understanding will directly inform the upcoming Disaster Adaptation Plan process led by the NSW Reconstruction Authority, which aims to embed multi-hazard risk considerations into land-use planning, infrastructure design, and community preparedness. By aligning this snapshot with the adaptation planning process, councils and partners can prioritise actions that reduce vulnerability and strengthen resilience across the region.

By presenting this information in a clear and accessible format, the Illawarra Shoalhaven Natural Hazards Snapshot serves as a practical tool for both councils and the wider community.  It aims to enhance awareness of local hazards, highlight areas of vulnerability, and foster a common foundation for collaborative risk reduction, emergency preparedness, and community education. This document supports ongoing efforts to build safer, more informed, and more resilient communities across the region, while providing regional background information for the Disaster Adaptation Plan process.
