Weed spreads over lagoon

Chief Weeds Officer David Pomery, has been battling an infestation of water hyacinth in Coomaditchie Lagoon since February.

Water hyacinth can double in size every week under the right conditions. Once it has takes over it dominates the ecosystem outcompeting native plants and any aquatic life underneath.

Unfortunately with the recent heavy rains, access to the site is limited. If the weather continues to be dry, remediation can take place and gain control of the infestation.

Water hyacinth is a state priority weed under the Biosecurity Act. Gardeners should take care if they have any of these weeds and contact IDWA for advice on how to dispose of them appropriately.

These plants cannot be sold anywhere in NSW. You can report an infestation to the NSW Biosecurity Helpline on 1800 680 244
