The Illawarra Shoalhaven Joint Organisation and member Councils undertook a regional benchmarking project with support from funding partner Local Government Procurement, which sought to unveil and highlight for action the local and regional barriers and opportunities to social and sustainable procurement.

A review of leading practice led to the development of core principles, which were mapped against current Council practice to identify actions for Council to improve their procurement outcomes.

This project enables a review of Councils current commitment and supports integration of activities related to social and sustainable procurement within public facing IP&R documents and internal procurement frameworks. Importantly it has provided a process and tool for Councils to benchmark themselves against leading practice, enabling reflection and identification of opportunities to drive an elevated approach to social and sustainable procurement practice.
